Workshop on Seismological Observatory Practice

A joint AfSC-EPOS capacity development initiative

November 24-27, 2026Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria

About the workshop

The European Plate Observatory System (EPOS) and the African Seismological Commission (AfSC) are promoting a Joint Capacity Development Initiative on Seismological Observatory Practice, targeting African seismologists, as well as Geophysics students.

This will be a hands-on workshop covering multiple aspects of seismological observatory routine, such as network configuration, metadata generation, telemetry and data acquisition and analysis.

The AfSC is a scientific organisation launched in 2014 by the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth’s Interior (IASPEI) as a regional commission of IASPEI. The mission of AfSC is to promote the science of seismology within the scientific community of African countries by developing research studies, expanding and enhancing scientific cooperation, and training young scientists.

EPOS is a multidisciplinary, distributed research infrastructure that facilitates the integrated use of data, data products, and facilities from the solid Earth science community in Europe. Together with similar organizations from the United States of America, Australia and New Zealand, EPOS is currently aiming to create a truly global research infrastructure for the Earth sciences. Towards this goal, cooperation with Africa and Latin America has been one of the priorities of EPOS.
